How much does forestry mulching cost per acre?
Illinois cost guides put forestry mulching at about $1,275 to $2,250 per acre in 2026. Posted downstate operator tiers run $1,000 to $1,750 for light growth, $1,750 to $2,750 for medium, and $2,750 and up for heavy, steep or rocky ground. Hourly work runs roughly $150 to $300.
Those are market figures, not our price list. Every forestry mulching job we quote gets priced off the actual ground, because an acre of scattered saplings and an acre of solid honeysuckle are not the same job. The ranges below are for budgeting, and they hold up well across Jackson, Union and Williamson counties.

One caution: national consumer sites print mulching averages as low as $400 to $800 per acre. Operator-published pricing in Illinois runs two to three times that. The low figures set expectations no local machine actually works for, so budget from the Illinois lines above.
What drives a mulching quote?
Stem density. This is the whole game. Guides price light brush at a third of what dense mixed hardwood costs. The machine spends time per stem, so more stems and bigger stems mean more hours.
Stem size. A skid steer mulching head is built for brush, saplings and small trees, with published capacity around the 6 to 8 inch range. Bigger trees need a different plan, and an honest operator says so at the estimate.
Slope and ground. Downstate tier pricing keys directly off slope percentage. Hills, hollows, rocks and wet bottoms all slow the pass. That is normal Shawnee Hills ground, and it is priced in, not discovered later.
Access and distance. The machine has to get there. Published mobilization fees run from about $150 flat to a few dollars per mile, which is why we quote travel plainly on far jobs.
Job size. Per-acre prices drop as acreage climbs, since the fixed costs spread out. Published guides show 3 acre jobs pricing meaningfully below 1 acre jobs on the same ground, and volume discounts at 5 acres and up.
How fast does the work go?
Published operator numbers put light brush at 2 to 4 machine hours per acre, medium growth at 4 to 8, and heavy stems at 6 to 12 or more. In day terms, most skid steer mulchers cover 1 to 3 acres a day. Most residential jobs we take finish in a day or two on site.
Speed is also where mulching earns its keep against conventional clearing. There is no separate cutting crew, no pile to burn, no trucks to load. The brush gets ground where it stands, the chips stay as ground cover, and there is no cleanup phase after the machine leaves. That is a big part of why research has priced mulching around half the cost of conventional clearing on comparable ground.
