Marion sits in central Williamson County at about 440 feet of elevation. It is the county seat, with roughly 17,000 people. West of town the map turns to water and timber. Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge covers close to 44,000 acres. Crab Orchard Lake alone runs near 7,000 acres. South of Marion, Lake of Egypt spreads across about 2,300 acres with about 90 miles of shoreline. Interstate 57 and Illinois 13 cross right in the middle of it all.
Head out from Marion toward Creal Springs or Pittsburg and the lots get bigger. Wooded acreage backs up to pasture, and old fence rows separate one field from the next. Ground like that fills in fast when nobody keeps after it. Bush honeysuckle and autumn olive have spread across southern Illinois. Multiflora rose is right behind them. It grows into a living fence you cannot push through. Left alone, that brush takes over pasture and shades out young timber.
The mulching head on the skid steer does most of the work. It grinds standing brush and saplings into chips that stay on the ground. There is no burn pile and nothing left stacked in the field. That matters on a lot near Lake of Egypt or a small tract off a county road in Marion. Tracks spread the weight, so the machine can work soft ground without tearing it up.
