Carterville sits at about 443 feet on rolling southern Illinois ground. Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge covers close to 44,000 acres along the south side of town. Crab Orchard Lake alone runs about 6,965 acres. The refuge mixes hardwood forest, crop fields, grazing units, brushland and wetland. Private ground near town often reads the same way. Oak and hickory on the high spots, open field in the middle, brushy edge between them.

Bush honeysuckle leafs out early and shades out whatever is under it. Multiflora rose grows into a living fence, and its thorns stop a mower cold. Autumn olive reaches twenty feet and spreads wherever birds drop seed. Drive Route 13 toward Crainville and Cambria and you see them on untended edges.
We look the job over with you first and agree on what stays and what goes. The mulching head runs on a tracked skid steer. Tracks spread the weight, so the ground takes less rutting than it would from wheels. The head grinds brush and saplings where they stand and cuts stumps down to grade. Material comes out as chip and stays put, so nothing gets stacked or burned. A typical residential lot is a one or two day job.
Around Carterville the work splits a few ways. Homeowners in the newer subdivisions want the back third of the lot opened up and kept that way. Wooded ground near the refuge usually calls for trail cutting, a path wide enough to walk or run a UTV.
