Herrin grew up as a coal town after coal was found here in the 1890s. Plenty of that mined and farmed ground has gone back to brush and young timber. The city itself is mostly houses now, and acreage starts outside the city limits. Illinois Route 148 runs north and south through Herrin and meets Route 13 near town. Bush honeysuckle and multiflora rose are widespread in Illinois and take over fence lines. Left alone, they turn open ground into a wall you cannot get through.

Stumps get cut to grade so the ground stays level for a mower. Tracks spread the weight, which helps on soft ground and wet creek bottoms. Nothing gets piled and nothing gets burned. You are left with a chip layer that holds soil and breaks down over time.
