Land clearing in Carbondale usually starts with ground you cannot use anymore. The back acre grew shut. A fence line vanished under brush. Carbondale sits on the northern edge of the Shawnee National Forest, and the land shows it. West toward Murphysboro the ground runs flatter and more open. South toward Makanda and Giant City it breaks into wooded ridges and steep ravines. Cedar Lake sits southwest of town, and lake ground grows over quickly. Either way, open ground fills in fast here. Bush honeysuckle and multiflora rose are common invasive plants in Southern Illinois. Autumn olive spreads the same way. A few wet seasons and the understory closes. Then the path you used to drive is gone.
We run a tracked skid steer with a forestry mulching head. It grinds brush and saplings where they stand. Small trees go the same way. Stumps get cut to grade in the same pass. There are no burn piles to deal with. The chips stay on the ground as mulch and hold soil on a slope. Our base is in Cobden, about 20 minutes south of Carbondale on US 51. Makanda is the halfway point, so Jackson County is a short run for us. We handle forestry mulching on wooded acreage and brush clearing along fence lines and field edges. Small jobs are welcome. Carbondale sits at about 449 feet, in the Big Muddy River watershed. The city limits touch three townships, including Carbondale and Makanda. That mix shows up in the properties. In town you get older lots with mature trees and tight back yards. Head a few miles out and lots get bigger. The 62903 side runs toward Unity Point and open rural ground. The 62902 side climbs toward Boskydell Road and Giant City Road.
South of town the Shawnee Hills start. Loess soil sits over glacial till, and it thins out on steep slopes. Giant City State Park covers about 4,052 acres of sandstone bluffs and ravines just south of Carbondale. Private ground nearby looks much the same. Cedar Lake covers about 1,750 acres southwest of town and supplies Carbondale tap water. Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge sits to the east. Wooded ravines and lake banks make up a lot of the private ground there.
It depends on what is growing and what you want left standing. Thick understory under good timber is a forestry mulching job. The head grinds out the brush and leaves the big trees alone. A fence line or field edge that grew over is brush clearing. Getting back to a deer stand or a lake bank is trail cutting. We open a lane wide enough for a side by side. Keeping the canopy over it slows regrowth in the lane.
A lot of hunting ground sits south and east of Carbondale. Hunting property improvement covers shooting lanes and access trails. Opening a thick understory can also improve bedding cover. Mulching knocks back bush honeysuckle and autumn olive at the same time. The head takes stumps down to grade as it goes. We do not pull stumps, haul brush, do dirt work or run a tree service.
