Vienna sits in the middle of Shawnee National Forest country. The forest covers more than 280,000 acres across southern Illinois, and Johnson County is one of its counties. Private ground here often butts up against public timber. The Tunnel Hill State Trail runs right through town, past the city park. From there it climbs toward the old railroad tunnel. South and west of Vienna, the land drops into the Cache River wetlands and cypress swamps.
The ground here does not stay open on its own. Old pasture and crop fields grow back to brush within a few years. Timber tracts get thick in the understory wherever light gets in. Multiflora rose and autumn olive move along the edges, and bush honeysuckle fills the gaps. Land around Vienna sells as timber and hunting tracts, so plenty of it has sat unmanaged for years.
