Goreville sits in the northwest corner of Johnson County at about 720 feet of elevation. Ferne Clyffe State Park borders the village on the south. Its sandstone bluffs and hollows set the tone for the whole area. Ground here rolls hard. You get ridge tops in oak and cedar, then steep drops into shaded hollows. Old pasture that stopped getting grazed turns to thicket fast on those slopes. Flat, open acreage is uncommon around here. Most tracts have some grade to them.
Lake of Egypt sits just north of Goreville and covers about 2,300 acres. It carries roughly 90 miles of shoreline made up of wooded bays and inlets. Lots at Eagle Point Bay, a little over three miles northeast of town, back straight into timber. East of Goreville, the ground toward Tunnel Hill and New Burnside runs the same way. Interstate 24 begins near Pulleys Mill and cuts past town toward Vienna. Acreage along that stretch is heavily wooded.
We bring the tracked skid steer in and work through the brush from one edge. The mulching head grinds stems a brush hog cannot handle. Everything comes out as chips that stay on the ground and hold the soil on a slope. Stumps get cut to grade so you can mow or drive over them. You keep the big trees you want. We can open a wooded acre and leave the canopy standing.
With Ferne Clyffe and the Shawnee timber close by, a lot of Goreville ground gets hunted. Trail cutting opens a lane wide enough to drive a side by side back to a stand. Hunting property improvement means knocking back honeysuckle and rose so browse and cover can come back. Bow season opens October 1 in Illinois, so this work is better done well before then.
